That's because most of the "British Invasion" groups cut their teeth on American music. Just about every song on Led Zeppelin's first 2 albums were old blues songs.
The Beatles early stuff was mostly covers of American R&B songs (called negro music at the time) and country songs.
The Rolling Stones early stuff was R&B, Rock-a Billy and Blues covers. Even the group's name comes from an old Muddy Waters song.
The Who's early stuff was covers of American rock and roll songs.
When British bands covered those songs, most people in the States had never heard most of them because back then, black performers weren't played on radio stations white kids listened to.
Why was it important to "make it" in America? Because that's where it came from. If you're a chef of Italian food, wouldn't you want to see how it accepted by Italians?
