You're not. Just to be safe, I'm resorting to segmented editing just to make sure I have it on time.

 

"segmented editing" not a term I'm familiar with

 

Basically I'm having the proofreading done in chunks--a few pages at a time. I won't incorporate the proofread bits into the story until the whole thing is done, then it'll go through an edit by me, one by my proofreader, and a final one by me before I post it.

 

I never did it that way, probably because I worry stuff to death before I ever send it out.

All writers should use whatever computerized spelling and grammar aides they can find, not because readers should be grammar Nazis, but to make it easier to communicate. It shows the writer's respect for his/her own work and for the reading audience.

Rushing usually results in mistakes that are glaring to the reader -- hard-to-read sentences, logistical mistakes (taking her panties off twice in the same scene, for instance), or goofing on characters' names. Often, a proofreader who is objective can be a huge help, especially if the writer doesn't make any last-minute changes like I did recently. :wall:

I still say we should read our stuff aloud before we post.

one method that I have found to work for me proofing another's work is to read the text backwards. Please note that this is not MY technique but one that was explained to me.

The backwards reading forces the brain to read each word individually istnaed of smiply seeing waht it epxetcs to see. -------- note that the last part of that sentence was deliberately mangled; I would be willing to bet that you were able to read it at speed anyway. The point of that distortion is that the brain sees what it EXPECTS to see. As the writer knows what he expects to have written, they can overlook malapropisms, typos, logical errors, etc simply by "knowing" what the text is supposed to be.

 

True. The human brain auto-corrects and fills in blanks. We can identify a familiar face seeing only part of it, and we can understand a mangled sentence if we wrote it, or if the errors aren't too terrible.

Excellent explanation.

 

Only a few thousand more words and some editing and polishing. I'm getting really excited about my entry--way more work than the CAW SS, but I have a feeling this is among my best work, definitely looking forward to seeing what people think.

 

Believe it or not, this technique works with enough practice.

Though somehow I still miss a few hundred mistakes here and there. More due to my own impatience than anything else.

Well I know I haven't been on much lately. My heart hasn't been up for writting the last few months. However since I have a little more than a day to get an entry into this KAW a short story popped into my head and would like to write it down. No promises though, but it shouldn't be too hard since I know it will be a short one. Good luck to all who enter.
