Many folks are interested in how Haiti got in the situation it is in and how those conditions might be reversed. If you are not, don't read the posts.

And.....if you had bothered to pay any attention at all....most of my previous posts herein were mostly to do with how and why Haiti is in the situation it's in.

How so?

 

The separation of Haiti and the Dominican Republic was established hundreds of years before the US occupation of 1918-32 (+/-), what the US did was to firmly establish the exact border, in an attempt to stop the continuing border wars.

This is not a point of contention, it is very clearly recorded history.

 

I have to wonder what or why the US had anything to do with Haiti in the first place.

It was pretty simple at the time, the country had been ravaged by plantation owners under French and Spanish colonizing eras. It was a fairly close neighbor who couldn't get their act together.

Prior to our going there in 1915, there had been six different Presidents either exiled or killed in 5 years. Germany had infiltrated the country during 1910 or so, they successfully married into prominent mulatto families and skirted the prohibition of foreigners owning land. The US was very concerned about the possiblity of a German colony there.

So we meddled, we actually built most of the HAitian infrastructure at that time. Water treatment, electrification of the urban ares, telephone system and improved roads, were all built by the US. We were just unsuccessful in building a lasting government there.

Hoover began to bail out in 1932, because we were having enough problems of our own at home, FDR finished the pull out in 1934..

 

So essentially what you're staying is that the US was the last occupier of Haiti and did in fact create the present day border between DR and Haiti? Thanks for agreeing with me!

There are things I just don't want to imagine.. On a German news programm, they just told the story of a woman who lost her entire family in Haiti within 3 days.

The parents invited their only daughter to Haiti as a gift for her great diploma. While the parents were in the Dominican Republic, the daughter stayed in the hotel. It was the day of the earthquake.
The father couldn't handle not knowing what happend to his daughter so he flew to Porte-au-Prince to look for her. He found her dead and returend to the Dominican Republic with her. Two days later, he died of a heart attack.

Imagine going on vacation with your family and returning home alone.

 

Yes this tragedy effected peoples from all over the globe. But now imagine that scene played out 200,000 times. There is no way to comprehend this.
